The South Wolverhamtpon & Bilston Academy

Two sixth-form students, Aimee Bradley and Viktorija Safonova recently took part in the Lessons from Auschwitz Project which is organised by the Holocaust Educational Trust.
This consisted of two seminars and a visit to Poland. The first seminar let the students examine pre-war Jewish life in photographs and information booklets they then heard a first-hand testimony from a holocaust survivor, who was in Auschwitz.
Their next step was to go on a day trip to Poland to visit both Auschwitz and Auschwitz- Birkenau and the town of Oświęcim on guided tours. They were first shown where the old Synagogue used to stand before it was torn down during WW2.

During their visit at Auschwitz they were shown many exhibits that contained the millions of shoes, bags, clothes, pots and pans that were left behind by the prisons in the camp as well as the last remaining gas chamber.

They were then taken to Auschwitz- Birkenau where they were shown the famous rail line, inside the building and the memorial built for those who lost their lives. At the end of the day the students took part in a remembrance ceremony where poems, prayers and testimonies were read out for the prisoners to honour and remember them.
After the day trip the students then attended a follow up seminar to reflect on their experience and consider any contemporary relevance of the Holocaust and to discuss and decide on their practical uses with the new information they have learnt in order to share it with the rest of the school.
