The South Wolverhamtpon & Bilston Academy

To celebrate the 20th World Book Day, SWB Academy launched special book filled activities for students.

The day began with a presentation during Form Time where students watched a video of staff explaining why reading is important to them and books that changed their lives.

During break time, a literary quote hunt was launched which asked students to find 20 quotes from popular books hidden around the Academy leading them to find out book titles or authors. Prizes of a bookish nature were all claimed at the end of the day by: Kelly Howard, Ashleigh Harris, Charley Hembery, Matt Gill, Amy Simcox and Megan Hinton.

During period 2, all Academy students and staff took part in D.E.A.R (Drop Everything and Read) time. This made for a really interesting break in the typical Academy day where extracts from new and popular books were shared by staff with students. All of the titles that were included in D.E.A.R time and six World Book Day titles are available to borrow from the Academy library.

There was a poetry workshop during lunch time in the library called ‘Blackout Poetry’ where extracts taken from popular books were reworked into an artistic poem. Students had fun reading through the texts, deciding how to apply designs to the page.

All students received a £1 World Book Day token that can be exchanged at all bookshops and most supermarkets for a special £1 World Book Day book or as a £1 off voucher any full priced book. Tokens are valid until 26 March 2017.
