The South Wolverhamtpon & Bilston Academy

For more than 9 months Mr Woodhouse and Mr Stevens have been working with a small cast of super talented students across all year groups to create SWB’s most ambitious drama production yet, “Little Shop of Horrors”, a comedy horror show about a blood sucking plant (“the Audrey II”) that grows to enormous size.  The cast was led by Josh Latunji as Seymour, and Beth Davies as Audrey, (see video interview below)

The show also featured a star turn from year 11 student Connor Leese who had audiences in fits of laughter as Orin, the crazed dentist.

Audiences were amazed by the incredibly soulful voice of Dajon Walters, who provided the voice of Audrey II offstage.

As well as being a vocally taxing show, there were added complexities as various puppets were required to show the different stages of the Audrey II , some of which can be seen in the video below.  Mrs Parsons, Mr Stevens, Mr Woodhouse and Mr Corcoran have been working around the clock to get these complicated puppets ready, and thanks also goes to sixth form art students who assisted in the paint job on “pod 4”, the final and largest stage of Audrey II.  This featured glow in the dark red veins and it looks truly impressive onstage, particularly when it was eating members of the cast!  These puppets were given life by the excellent puppeteering skills of Jake Jones and Sanjay Burnett.

Special thanks also goes to Mr Griffin’s piano playing, and Mr Hill on bass, who had been tutoring two students (Matthew O’ Sullivan on bass and Anna Trnovska on drums) to play the entire score, an amazing achievement considering these students had not touched an instrument until last September!

The show played to 3 audiences – a primary school matinee on Wednesday morning, and two evening shows on Wed 5th and Thursday 6th April, all audiences raved about how good the show was.

On to the next show!  If any students are interested in our future production, please see Mr Woodhouse, we are particularly looking for boys who are willing to sing.  Congratulations to everyone involved in this great show!
