The South Wolverhamtpon & Bilston Academy

OSWB Academy embraced the opportunity to celebrate all aspects of PE and Sport by participating in the National School Sports Week which took place from Monday 26th June to Friday 30th June. There were a huge amount of activities to get involved with! These included; Yr7/8 football, Yr9/10 football and an all years rounders competition which had over 35 students (and some of the staff) taking part. Every break time Mr Lawley and Joe Wicks (The Body coach) did a workout for 10 minutes every break time – well done to the students that got stuck in and involved.

In addition to these competitions that took place after school, there were some great opportunities for students within their lesson time. On Monday the 6th form BTEC Sport students travelled to Worcester University to take part in a sports fitness testing session and to find out more about university life. All students had a great day and it was a really positive experience for them all.

During the Thursday session after school, Mrs Shoker gave some of the elite sports performers a presentation on healthy eating within performance along with the opportunity to make healthy and nutritious smoothies which could help their performance when in competitions and tournaments. All students said this was a great opportunity to learn something new in the kitchens and to hopefully improve their performance on the pitch!
Meanwhile Maths decided to take 64 students onto the astroturf to calculate distances, measure times and other mathematical challenges which all incorporated aspects of data and numbers. All the students worked really well outside – especially those performing over 500 hula-hoop rotations!

However, the highlight of the week was a visit from Krisitan Thomas – Team GB’s Men’s Olympic Gymnastic Captain. Kristian and his team put students through their paces in the style of a fitness circuit. Once all the 100 Yr7 students completed the fitness circuit, Kristian gave a brilliant demonstration of some of the skills used within his routines. His diving forward rolls & handstands were brilliant! Every student was fortunate to have a picture with Kristian and students will be receiving this in the near future.

In total over 260 students took part in the National School Sports week with next year being even bigger and better!
