The South Wolverhamtpon & Bilston Academy

Sixth Form Attendance & Punctuality

All students at Ormiston SWB Academy are expected to have excellent attendance and this also applies to Sixth Form students. The minimum attendance rate for Sixth Formers is 95%. The Sixth Form Team will undertake daily attendance checks and truancy calls will be made home where an unexplained absence is identified. As in the lower years authorisation will not be given for absence during term time unless there are exceptional reasons. Holidays should not be taken during term time.

Unforeseen Absence

If students are unable to attend Sixth Form due to illness or unexpected absence the student or a parent/guardian must:

  • Telephone the academy on 01902 493797 or email post16@oswba.co.uk by 8:45am on the day of the absence.
  • Phone or email Sixth Form every day until the student's return.
  • All full day or partial absences must be confirmed by a signed letter from a parent/guardian on the student's return to the Academy. Medical absences for more than five consecutive days will require a medical certificate from the student's doctor. This is especially important if a student is absent just before or during exams. Students unexpectedly needing to go home during the school day must report to Miss Walker to complete the relevant documentation BEFORE leaving.

Planned Absence

If students know in advance that they are going to be absent for any reason they must:

  • Seek authorisation form Miss Walker prior to the day of absence and have an authorised absence form completed and signed off to ensure the absence has been agreed. Students should obtain any work that is to be covered during the missed sessions.
  • Such authorised absences include University Open Days (we expect students to book visits to universities on Saturdays if the university offers this) and interviews, or pre-scheduled hospital/orthodontic appointments.

Punctuality

  • Students are expected to be punctual to all tutors times, tutor meetings and timetabled lessons.
  • Being on time to lessons will not only make sure that students get the most out of your time with the subject teachers but it is also an indication of your commitment and a mark of respect for your teachers and your peers.
  • Students also need to be aware that when future references are requested by employers or universities, we are frequently asked to provide attendance and punctuality data.
